Palate Wheel 2.0
I created this wheel as a guide to the tasting notes in cigars. The wheel is an idea based on taste, aroma and body. Most people can taste the primary groups, which consist of the basic notes, bitter, salty, sour and sweet. The secondary group have the more common notes, wood, earth, vegetal and spice. This group is synonyms for the aromas, dry, fermented, creamy and strong. The third group (composite group) have more the specific notes, based on the primary and secondary group. I.e. cocoa is a composite of primary bitter, secondary earth (creamy) and a full body.
Based on these combinations, a strong-salty-medium taste can be compared to the licorice note and a creamy-sweet-full taste can be compared to the chocolate note. This will make it easy for novice and experienced smokers to improve their palate and see the relation between taste, aroma and body.
Use the wheel with your next smoke and start enjoying your cigars in a new way. Begin by finding the taste, bitter, sour, sweet or salty. Then the aroma, dry, fermented, creamy or strong. Then the body, medium or full. Use your findings in the wheel.
